Devotion to Making
My trugs are a reflection of my life, culture, spirituality, education and over a decade of perfecting my unique craft skills and sculptural language. These vessels flow and proportionally are very sensitive so require constructing by connecting to intuition, reading the curves and my dedication to making through an arduous level of focus. It’s about balancing flare and technicalities with consistency and continuity a mediative but intense focus. This is what brings sprit, soul, energy flow and presence to the objects. The wood is selected, cared for, marked, machined three times, hand sanded on every edge, stem bent, dried, put into packs, marked, constructed, sanded and oiled three times. I work in batches with each piece taking from 15 – 30 hours for my extra-large commissions to complete and care for over an eight-day period. My intentional directness, honesty and simplicity in design hides no imperfections and so full control and care is taken at every stage of the processes.
